Hands on experience, an unconventional
path to becoming an architect.
Shane’s experience in the building industry is deeply rooted in both hands-on construction and innovative architectural design. Beginning at 14, he worked within his family’s building company, gaining practical insights into the construction world. Over the years, he expanded his expertise, from earning an NVQ in bricklaying to managing construction projects and later working in architectural visualization.
After launching his own company, Horizon Design and Build, Shane blended his skills in design and construction, specializing in creating outdoor spaces while providing architectural services. His diverse background enables him to merge the practical demands of construction with the creative vision of architecture.

Introduction to the built environment
Gaining an NVQ in Bricklaying
During my secondary school years, a program was introduced that allowed students to pursue an NVQ qualification alongside their GCSEs. This initiative provided exposure to various trades, offering a broad understanding of construction techniques. I chose to specialize in bricklaying, continuing to develop my skills in this trade beyond the initial introduction.

Reimagining Irregular Outdoor Space
Outdoor space designed and constructed by Horizon Design and Build
The client, owning a corner plot with an irregular geometry, faced challenges in optimizing the use of the available space. A comprehensive site survey was conducted, followed by the development of detailed architectural plans to maximize the plot’s potential. I led the project in collaboration with a dedicated team, ensuring a thoughtful and efficient design approach tailored to the unique spatial constraints.

HMO Renovation
Design and project management 6 bedroom HMO
Collaborating closely with a property developer on their inaugural renovation project, I developed architectural plans to maximize the potential of a former four-bedroom HMO. The design process included comprehensive interior design services to enhance the space's functionality and aesthetic appeal. I oversaw both the design and construction phases, ensuring seamless project management from concept to completion.

Tradition meets contemporary

Horizon Design and Build was approached by a family seeking to transform their sloped outdoor space. After conducting a thorough site survey and engaging in detailed discussions to explore potential design concepts, we developed comprehensive plans and visualizations. I managed the construction process personally, leading a skilled team of tradesmen to bring the project to fruition, ensuring the design was executed with precision and attention to detail.

Single storey extension: Cornwall
Single storey extension built by GB Building contactors
Utilizing my bricklaying expertise, I collaborated with a small team to construct a modern extension to a 300-year-old cottage in Cornwall. The work was carried out in accordance with the architect's plans and adhered strictly to building regulations, ensuring the seamless integration of contemporary design elements with the historic character of the property.

Corona virus interaction
Outdoor space designed and constructed by Horizon Design and Build
Collaborating with a young couple during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, where social interactions were limited to outdoor settings, this project was designed with a strong emphasis on creating a functional and welcoming outdoor space. The design was tailored to facilitate safe gatherings with friends and family, providing the couple with a vital social connection in line with the restrictions of the time. This consideration became the central focus in shaping their outdoor environment.

Seaside family living
Extension and renovation by GB Building contactors with design by Shane
Collaborating with a client who openly shared her experience with autism and found it challenging to visualize the architect’s plans, I established a strong working relationship to ensure her needs were met. I created adaptable 3D renderings to effectively communicate the design, enabling her to make informed adjustments so the project could align with her vision. In addition to this personalized approach, I developed detailed plans for each trade involved on-site and took an active role in carrying out various building works to ensure the project's successful completion.

Urban retreat
Outdoor space designed and constructed by Horizon Design and Build
The client approached me with a vision to transform their outdoor area into an urban retreat. Their goal was to repurpose the existing deck while creating an open, inviting space for relaxation. After careful evaluation of the site, a design was developed to maintain the deck's functionality while enhancing the overall layout to foster a sense of tranquility and openness, aligning with the client’s desire for a serene outdoor environment.

Corona virus interaction
Design and project management of forgotten family Home
Collaborating with a small property developer to renovate a family home that had remained vacant for over a decade, I developed a design that maximized the available space to enhance its market appeal. Managing both the design and construction phases of the project, I worked closely with structural engineers and local building control authorities, who had previously classified the property as unsafe. This coordination ensured that all necessary structural reinforcements and regulatory requirements were met, resulting in a successful transformation of the home.

Manageable outdoor space
Outdoor space designed and constructed by Horizon Design and Build
Horizon Design and Build was engaged to design an outdoor space that maintained a natural aesthetic while ensuring security and ease of maintenance. Collaborating closely with the client, we developed a design that featured a geometric, tridiagonal layout, harmonizing with the architectural character of their home. The result was a thoughtfully crafted space that balanced organic elements with practicality and style.

Iconic historic renovation
Renovation of the historic Smeatons lighthouse
Tasked with refurbishing the historic and iconic Smeaton Lighthouse for the local government, I led the project to ensure adherence to rigorous health and safety standards. This involved overseeing the construction of a secure fencing system around the lighthouse's base, ensuring both the preservation of its historical integrity and the implementation of necessary safety measures.

Optimal heath and safety
Renovation works within a government building
Leading a small team on a refurbishment project within a council-owned building in central Plymouth, I focused on renovating the communal areas and stairways. This project required strict adherence to health and safety regulations, given the building’s public accessibility. My role involved ensuring that all work was executed to the highest standards while maintaining a safe environment for both occupants and the public.
