Mayflower Housing
Location: Plymouth City Centre
Year: 2020
Client: Plymouth University - Plymouth Community Homes
As Plymouth undergoes significant change, the city's most vulnerable are at risk of being left behind. The Step-Up Partnership addresses this by transforming an underutilized space in northern Plymouth into a welcoming, inclusive environment focused on education, housing, and healthcare.
The Mayflower Housing Project, a key part of this initiative, reimagines the city's layout to create open, inviting spaces that connect the University of Plymouth with the broader community. Inspired by the Tivoli Hotel in Copenhagen and Zed Pods, the project elevates residential areas, incorporating green spaces, parks, and gardens.
It provides both temporary and long-term affordable housing, with ground-floor spaces dedicated to local charities and housing services. The construction features a reinforced concrete base and cross-laminated timber (CLT) structure, designed for ease of assembly and maintenance, ensuring a sustainable and supportive living environment for residents.
